Going to the salon for a hair touch-up or colour can be an expensive task, especially for people who often need to cover their grey strands with hair colour. Hair colouring at home can be the best idea. It not only saves your trip to the parlour but also your money. And we all know that money saved is money earned. So, why not?

But many people may find it difficult to colour their hair at home. So, this article is all about how to colour hair at home.

Before going deeper into the topic, it is important to pick/select the colour that is harmless for your hair. It is important to understand the ingredients that go into the making of the product. Try to avoid hair colour with ammonia because ammonia can cause a lot of harm to your hair. It directly hits the follicle of your hair to leave the pigment. Hence, the roots get the impact to the highest limit and you may even end up causing damage to the texture of your hair.

Bleach

Bleach can be harmful to your hair as well because it aids to get the desired colour into the hair. When you wish to go a shade lighter than your natural hair colour, then bleach is the most obvious option. If you have previously coloured your hair, then bleach is required to change the original colour to the desired colour. Hence, aim to colour at home without the use of bleach. But you cannot skip the process if you need the desired colour that is a shade lighter than the colour that you already have in your hair.

Developer

After choosing the desired colour, you have to select the developer accordingly. Compare the shade of your current hair colour and the colour that you target to apply. This will help to decide the developer’s strength. Bleach will be required if you have to go 3 shades darker than the existing colour. To go 1 shade lighter, 20% developer is needed. 30% developer is required if you have to go 2 shades lighter than the current hair colour. And 40% developer is required if you have to go 3 shades lighter than the current hair colour.

While going a shade darker than the existing one, 10% developer is required. However, aim to buy the same brand of colour and developer. If you are buying Godrej hair colour, buy the same brand developer.

Patch Test

This is an important step that first-timers should never ignore. Colour may react differently on the different scalp and skin types. So, it is important to do a patch test on your scalp. This is most likely done on the back side of your head behind the ear. Take a small amount of colour and apply it behind your ear. Leave for a day. If you experience any itching, rash, or discomfort; remove it and shift trying the same process with another brand of hair colour. If the colour suits your scalp, there will be no rash, itching, or discomfort.

Gather the tools for hair colour at home

You will need the help of a few tools to colour your hair at home. Make sure you start the process with the following things handy:

  • A bowl to mix the colour.
  • Hair brush
  • Clips
  • Gloves
  • Comb

If you are buying a pack that has colour, developer, and gloves; then you just need a bowl, comb, and brush. Make sure to wear a cape on your attire so that you do not damage your clothes. If you don’t wish to buy a colouring cape from the market, you can use an old pair of clothes so that you do not stain your favourite garment. Take a plastic bowl and avoid taking a metal one because metal can react with hair colour.

Now, you are ready to apply the hair colour.

Follow the steps to colour hair at home:

  • Make sure your hair is dry.
  • Divide your hair into sections so that you can easily apply colour to them. You can easily section them from centre and ear to ear.
  • Now, wear your gloves before you start opening the tube of colour and developer. Keep the mixing bowl and brush ready. If you have a pre-mix pack, then simply pour the ingredients, mix, and you are ready. If you have the ingredients separate, then mix according to the desired hair colour.
  • An important thing to note here is not to save the mixed colour because it has peroxide that is not good to save for later use. So, mix the content that is required to cover your hair.
  • You can start applying now. You already have your hair in sections. So, start applying from anywhere you want. Make sure to keep cotton pads on the forehead so that you do not stain your forehead.
  • Leave the colour on your head for 30-40 minutes or as mentioned on the pack that you have purchased.
  • Then rinse and shampoo your hair. Finish with the conditioner of your choice.

A simple tip for longer hair colour stay:

Do not wash your hair daily as the more you wash, the faster the colour will fade. So, wash it after 2-3 days so that the hair colour stays longer. Moreover, hair produces natural oils and daily hair wash steals natural oils from your hair.

Final Thoughts

It is simple to colour hair at home. Moreover, if you follow the above-mentioned tips about how to colour at home, you will be sorted and can save your frequent trips to the salon. The technique to colour hair at home is super simple if you are a little aware of the right product to purchase. If you follow the simple steps and educate yourself about the right purchase, you can start enjoying hair colouring at home. You can easily experiment with hair shades and try a new look each time you want to apply hair colour.
